On this day in 1955, Disneyland opened its gates in Anaheim, Calif., built on 160 acres of former orange groves and changing the amusement park industry forever. It featured four themed sections—Adventureland, Fantasyland, Frontierland, and Tomorrowland—and reportedly had an admission fee of $1. While opening day didn’t go fully to plan, it became a popular destination nonetheless. Walt Disney himself spent much of his time there until he embarked on his next big venture—an even bigger Disney theme park and resort near Orlando, Fla. He died in 1966 before he could realize this dream, however, though his legacy lives on. For those who’d like to look back at Disneyland’s opening day nearly 70 years ago, Travel + Leisure has you covered.
