The U.S. Postal Service on this date in 1963 introduced the Zone Improvement Plan Code, commonly known as the ZIP code. Now key to seeing that mail is processed quickly and efficiently (and verifying that voters are complaining to communicating with their respective member in the House of Representatives), a cheerful cartoon mascot named Mr. ZIP played a role in familiarizing the masses with the new number so they’d remember to add it to their envelopes. The internet says there are 41,642 ZIP codes in the country; ZIP code 41642, for whatever it’s worth, looks to be represented by Rep. Hal Rogers (R-Ky.), the dean of the House.
