An oasis in the pharmacy desert

NCPA October 22, 2026

APPharmacy deserts are growing in Milwaukee, and patients are turning to independent pharmacies for access to vital, often lifesaving, medications. In this month’s issue of America's Pharmacist®, we spoke with the owners and managers of independents in the city about their role in the community.

In the magazine, we also review business considerations for opening a location in an underserved area and talk with a subject matter expert on the causes of pharmacy deserts and what policy options are on the table to address them.

Also in this issue:

  • An interview with NCPA member Alissa Griffith, owner of Quik Stop Pharmacy in Thorndale, Pa.
  • How to uncover patients’ vital signs information hiding in your e-scripts
  • Why human resources are a vital strategic asset
  • Building a culture of trust to enhance LTC vaccination rates
  • How post-grads can build financial and personal stability for the short and long term
