Neil Armstrong, the first person to walk on the moon, was born in Wapakoneta, Ohio, on this day in 1930. He was selected as an astronaut in 1962 and landed on the moon in 1969 as part of the Apollo 11 mission, capturing the attention of the nation and the world. Armstrong retired from NASA the year after Apollo 11, and from 1971 to 1979 was a professor at the University of Cincinnati, teaching classes and conducting research. He died on Aug. 25, 2012. To learn more about the contributions of Armstrong and other Ohioans to aviation and the exploration of space, you can visit the Armstrong Air and Space Museum in Wapakoneta—a mere 90 minutes or so from where we’ll be in October for #NCPA2024!
