Tennessee governor signs expansion of pharmacy scope of practice into law

NCPA May 24, 2024

Gov. Bill Lee (R-Tenn.) signed into law SB 869/HB 282, which makes permanent PREP ACT authorities for immunization and testing, and allows pharmacists to prescribe preventative medication for medical conditions. The legislation includes permitting pharmacists to dispense under certain conditions: opioid antagonists, epinephrine auto-injectors, post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) for exposure to HIV infection and hormonal contraception. We are proud to stand with the Tennessee Pharmacists Association; the bill’s sponsor, Sen. Shane Reeves; and fellow national pharmacy partners in this great accomplishment! Tennessee is among the 30+ states that have expanded pharmacists’ scope of practice to align with the PREP Act. The PREP Act expires in December 2024.
