If you caught NCPA CEO Douglas Hoey’s Executive Update last Friday, you read about Danny Cottrell’s perspective on the event. "I've always thought [fly-in] was the most important meeting they could possibly go to," he told America's Pharmacist® in a profile last summer. "Not only because they could see the Capitol building, but because of how many different federal organizations have a finger in their business now and in the future." Fun fact — there are exactly 438 organizations and sub-organizations listed in the Federal Register. Some of them are part of the four broad types of agencies — cabinet departments, executive agencies, regulatory bodies, and government corporations. There are 15 that form the president’s cabinet-level executive departments (headed by the secretaries of agriculture, interior, labor, state, and so on). Fingers-in-your-business aside, to quote Cottrell, there are no fewer than 17 pharmacy organizations who operate in the government’s orbit who are looking to the future of pharmacy — from your own NCPA to APhA (another one you know well), to the American College of Clinical Pharmacy to the Board of Pharmacy Specialties. There are a lot of voices competing to be heard, and a lot at stake in this election cycle coming up.
