Back in 1905, an 11-year-old named Frank Epperson invented the original Popsicle back in his San Francisco Bay area home. After mixing up a powdered soda, he left the drink out overnight with the stirring stick in it. It turned really cold that night and the next morning, Frank found the liquid frozen on the stick. He called his creation an Epsicle, a portmanteau of his name and icicle. In 1922 he introduced his frosty treat to the world, eventually changing the name to what his children called them, “Pop’s Sicle.” Sadly, Frank fell on hard times, and before the decade ended, he sold all the rights to the frosty invention. Frank died in 1983 at the age of 89.
