FDA survey on DSCSA electronic tracking

NCPA September 10, 2026

The Food and Drug Administration is assessing the feasibility of small dispensers conducting interoperable, electronic tracing of products at the package level under the Drug Supply Chain Security Act. The survey deadline is Sept. 22. This assessment has major implications for how you handle the dispensing of medications moving forward, so we urge pharmacy companies with 25 or fewer full-time employees to complete the survey before the deadline.

The survey takes about 15 minutes and covers topics including whether the necessary software and hardware are readily accessible, if they are prohibitively expensive to use, and whether they can be integrated into business practices.

Complete the survey here; more information is available on the FDA’s website.

To allow time for the FDA to complete the assessment and a public comment process on its results, as well as host a public meeting on it, the agency issued exemptions for small dispensers from electronic tracing requirements through Nov. 27, 2027.

See information on the exemption here. NCPA has also produced a DSCSA compliance checklist for small pharmacies; you can read it here.
