NCPA speaks at supply chain event

NCPA September 3, 2026

NCPA’s Lisa Schwartz, PharmD, senior director of professional affairs, joined Arthi Nagaraj of Sanofi US and Libby Dewey of Cardinal Health on a panel at the HDA Traceability Seminar in Washington, D.C., on Sept. 2. Facilitated by Jaidalyn Rand of HDA, the panel discussed how manufacturers, distributors, and pharmacies are preparing for the transition period of the industry’s adoption of a 12-digit NDC.

Schwartz called attention to the much greater impacts on pharmacy operations of 12-digit NDC compared to DSCSA, which was also discussed during the two-day supply chain seminar. In particular, pharmacy management systems, robotics, prescription claims processors, other reporting formats (e.g. immunization registry, PDMP), and additional to-be-discovered stakeholders will have to support multiple NDC lengths on the effective date in March 2033, but also preserve access and functionality of records retained after the three-year labeling transition that ends in March 2036.
