More than a decade ago when the Drug Supply Chain Security Act was passed, NCPA secured a provision that required the Food and Drug Administration to conduct an assessment on the feasibility of small-business dispensers conducting interoperable, electronic tracing of products at the package level before the law could go fully into effect. Small dispensers have been exempted from the electronic tracing requirements; last week, that exemption was extended through Nov. 27, 2027. This exemption allows time to complete the small dispenser assessment, publish the final assessment report for public comment, and host a public meeting on the assessment.
See information on the exemption here.
NCPA urges pharmacy companies with 25 or fewer full-time employees (i.e. “small dispensers”) to complete the survey before the deadline, which is Sept. 22, 2026. More information about the survey is available on the FDA’s website.
