Andy Warhol was born on this day in 1928 in Pittsburgh. He rose to fame quickly as an illustrator in the 1950s working for some of the biggest brands in the world, including Columbia Records, Tiffany & Co., and NBC, before shifting to spend more of his time in the fine arts. You’ve probably seen his most famous work, the Campbell’s Soup Cans series, but that was just the start of his career in the Pop art style.
He also produced portraits in a similar style of Marilyn Monroe, Elvis Presley, and other big names of the day. Alongside that, he worked in other mediums. He produced films and performance art shows, including one featuring the Velvet Underground. Over the decades, he also collaborated with other artists of great stature, including Jean-Michel Basquiat and Keith Haring. He died in 1987 due to complications from surgery.
