On this day in 1973, Elvis Presley made television and entertainment history with a live show from Honolulu, Hawaii. Performed live at the Honolulu International Center Arena, the concert was watched in homes across the southeast Asia and island countries across the Pacific. The U.S. had to settle for a 90-minute special aired three months later, in order to avoid overlap with another Elvis film covering his coast-to-coast tour the year before and the Super Bowl.
Somewhere between 1 and 1.5 billion people (not a typo) saw the 22-song show, an absolutely unheard-of number that would be just as impressive today. He also managed to raise $75,000 for the Kui Lee Cancer Fund — equivalent to almost $550,000 today."
