NCPA Committee Forum charts the path forward for 2026

NCPA December 1, 2025

Last month, NCPA convened pharmacy leaders from across the country for the 2025 Committee Forum — a focused, high-energy two-day event to discuss what independent pharmacies need most in the coming year. Committee members dug into the realities shaping their businesses and their patients, offering insight that will help NCPA’s strategic direction. Across discussions, several clear themes emerged.

Driving meaningful payment reform
Committee members reinforced what we continue to hear from the field: reimbursement challenges remain the most significant barrier to sustainability. Whether looking at Medicaid managed care, Medicare Part D, or commercial plans, participants stressed the need for stronger enforcement, clearer guardrails, and structural reforms that protect patient access and stabilize pharmacy operations.

Expanding pharmacist-provided care
There continues to be a growing need to increase the breadth of clinical services that community pharmacies can offer. Conversations highlighted everything from immunization authority and testing to LTC-at-home and other models of care. Members emphasized the importance of aligning training, technician engagement, and operational workflows so pharmacies can confidently meet the needs of an aging, increasingly complex patient population.

Technology as a catalyst for smarter operations
Technology readiness continues to be front and center. Committees explored the evolving landscape of data governance, cybersecurity, AI, interoperability, and more. The takeaway was clear: stronger technology infrastructure and practical education will be essential to improving efficiency, strengthening decision-making, and enhancing patient engagement in the years ahead.

Strengthening the workforce pipeline
Committee members reiterated the need to bolster technician development, support staff utilization, and create more meaningful touchpoints for student pharmacists. Ensuring a strong workforce is critical not only for day-to-day operations but also for advancing new service opportunities and sustaining the future of independent pharmacy.

Insights from this year’s Committee Forum will directly inform NCPA’s 2026 priorities and program development. As we move into next year, members will see these conversations reflected across our policy agenda, educational offerings, and resources to support independent pharmacy.
