Magazine: How natural disasters affect pharmacies and their communities

NCPA August 1, 2025

featureThe past 12 months have been marked by some of the worst natural disasters in recent memory. In this month's America's Pharmacist®, we covered the aftermath of both the January 2025 fires that swallowed up large parts of the Los Angeles metro area and the flooding that resulted from Hurricane Helene's landfall last September. Throughout the issue we bring you six stories on how pharmacists experienced the destruction, how they worked to support their communities, and what has happened since.

Among the stories is that of Gordon and Shirley Wong, co-owners of Knolls Pharmacy. Like much of the Pacific Palisades neighborhood of Los Angeles, their pharmacy was razed by the Palisades fire. Surrounded by the debris of collapsed structures, the site where it sat is now a flat, empty lot. We cover the role their pharmacy played in their community, their business success, and how they lost it all. We also explore how they plan to rise from the ashes. You can preview the Wongs' story here.

Also in the issue:

  • A guide to applying for the NCPA Foundation Disaster Relief Fund

  • A profile of Thad Schumacher, NCPA member in Fitchburg, Wis.

  • A Q&A with Elise Damman, director of program development of the NCPA Innovation Center

  • CPESN® USA's announcement of the 2025 CPESN Most Engaged Pharmacy Awards, sponsored by CPA
