Great Scott! “Back to the Future,” the comedy/adventure/sci-fi classic starring Michael J. Fox as Marty McFly, was released in American theaters on this day in 1985. The film follows McFly as he inadvertently drives a DeLorean time machine from 1985 back to 1955 and must race the clock to ensure his future parents fall in love. It premiered at No. 1 in the box office during its opening weekend, NBCUniversal says: “It became the highest-grossing film of 1985, and in 2007, the United States Library of Congress selected it for preservation in the National Film Registry.” These days, you can indulge in the original or its sequels via streaming services, embrace the nostalgia through video games, or check out a newer iteration in theaters across the country where “Back to the Future: The Musical” will be landing on tour.
