HHS urges insurance companies to cooperate with providers after cyber-attack

NCPA March 11, 2024

A letter penned (on a weekend, no less) by HHS Secretary Xavier Becerra and Department of Labor Acting Secretary Julie Su called on UnitedHealth Group and other insurance companies and payers to cooperate with health care providers whose cash flow and normal operations have been upended by the cyber-attack on UHG first reported in February. Despite the Change Healthcare status page reporting that most services pharmacies use are restored, pharmacies continue to report several services remain offline including Medicaid processing in certain states, manufacturer copay assistance programs and Part B claims. Optum is offering temporary financial assistance for eligible providers based on its analysis of claims history. Pharmacies can use an online form to inquire about eligibility. Review carefully the terms of accepting this assistance. Updates on the cyber-attack have yet to forecast a date for the claims clearinghouse pharmacies may rely on for their Part B claims.
