NCPA staff Steve Postal joined APhA and NACDS last week in a meeting with DEA staff to discuss pharmacy access to medication for opioid use disorder (MOUD) and pharmacy burglaries. DEA discussed increases in pharmacy burglaries, and ways in which pharmacies can enhance security to prevent theft, and noted that written guidance for pharmacies may be forthcoming. DEA stated that it does expect to see an increase in pharmacies purchasing MOUD, and that it respects state laws regarding pharmacists’ right to prescribe MOUDs. DEA mentioned that it is sympathetic to pharmacies’ complaints of getting poorly reimbursed for MOUD, but that reimbursement is not within DEA’s jurisdiction.
