Following the beginning of open enrollment on Oct. 15, CMS released star ratings for 2024 on the plan finder. Plans are rated on a five-star scale, with one being the lowest and five the highest. For 2024, Medicare Advantage with prescription drug (Part D) coverage (MA-PD) contracts are rated on up to 40 unique quality and performance measures; MA-only contracts (without Part D coverage) are rated on up to 30 measures; and PDP contracts are rated on up to 12 measures. Ratings are published so patients can make health care decisions that are best for their situation.
According to CMS, approximately 74 percent of people currently in MA plans that offer prescription drug coverage are enrolled in a plan that earned four or more stars in 2024, and approximately 42 percent of MA plans that offer prescription drug coverage will have an overall rating of four stars or higher in 2024. The average star rating for MA-PD plans was 4.04 for 2024, down from 4.14 in 2023. The average star rating for Part D plans was 3.11 for 2024, down from 3.25 in 2023.
