The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services announced on Thursday that pharmacists will retain certain authorities under the PREP Act declaration for COVID-19 countermeasures through December of 2024. The announcement comes on the heels of a productive March meeting between NCPA CEO Douglas Hoey and HHS Secretary Xavier Becerra about the implications and the importance of the extension. Under the forthcoming amendment to the PREP Act declaration, pharmacists, technicians, and interns may continue administering COVID-19 vaccines and flu vaccines for patients age 3 years and older. They can also continue administering COVID-19 tests and Paxlovid.
