Web goes wild for ribbon-winning grandma

Here’s story to start your week with a smile. Last month, the Virginia Kentucky Fair District posted to Facebook the winners of its annual contests, and one name dominated. Really dominated. The name is Linda Skeens, and she has become something of an internet folk hero. A viral Super Homemaker. Here’s what Linda won: first, second, and third place for best cookies. Same for candy and for savory bread. She won the blue ribbon for cake, pie, brownie, and sweet bread and best overall baked good (that was strawberry fudge). She also won for canned tomatoes, canned corn, pickled peppers, sauerkraut, relish, spaghetti sauce, and both jelly and jam. Then she took top honors in quilt embroidery. The world wanted Linda to cook for them. She was tracked down and in an interview with a Dallas radio station, she revealed that she’d been diagnosed with leukemia in December, the treatment is working so far, and that she loves cooking for family and friends. I think it’s safe to say that, in the realm of county fair blue-ribbon winners, Linda just may be the GOAT.
