NCPA urges California governor to sign anti-steering bill

NCPA September 3, 2021

In a letter, NCPA urged California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D)to sign SB 524 into law. The bill would protect patient access to community pharmacy services by prohibiting insurers and PBMs from steering patients to insurer/PBM-owned pharmacies. The bill has passed the legislature and (as of Friday) awaits the governor’s signature. In its comments, NCPA pointed out that patient steering is an anti-competitive practice that not only hurts community pharmacies, but also hinders patients’ authority to make healthcare decisions for themselves.
