KANSAS CITY, MO. (Oct. 4, 2022) – Hugh M. Chancy, RPh, was installed as 2022-2023 president of the National Community Pharmacists Association by its House of Delegates at the organization’s 2022 Annual Convention in Kansas City, Mo. Chancy is co-owner of Chancy Drugs which includes five retail pharmacies and one closed-door pharmacy located throughout South Georgia. The business is celebrating more than 55 years of service and specializes in compounding, specialty packaging, and enhanced clinical services.
In his remarks to the House of Delegates, Chancy said, “The pandemic has been a kick-start for pharmacy practice transformation. As a profession, we are finally looking at what we are capable of accomplishing differently. Because of this, payers and patients have greater expectations from us.” Chancy discussed the importance of clinical services, the need to strengthen network access standards, the value of strong pharmacy teams and the need for reforms to the pharmacy payment system, among other things. He thanked his family and friends for supporting him along the way and said, “We have many opportunities in the coming year to transform pharmacy, and I’m up for the challenge.”
Born and raised in Hahira, Ga., Chancy became familiar with pharmacy’s impact on the lives of patients through his father, also a pharmacist. Upon graduation from the University of Georgia College of Pharmacy, Chancy worked for a chain in Columbus, Ga., but he soon realized the opportunity to build on his family’s business and moved back to serve the familiar faces of his hometown. He was not the only one who moved back to help the people of the community. His pharmacy school sweetheart and wife, Tina Chancy, began working down the street from one of the stores as a hospital pharmacist. After a couple of years there, Tina went into business with Hugh. Their son, Patrick, is carrying on the legacy as well, having graduated from the University of Georgia College of Pharmacy in 2017.
Leading up to becoming NCPA president, Chancy has long been involved with pharmacy associations on the state and national levels. He has been a member of NCPA since 2000 and is currently serving on the boards of Academy of Independent Pharmacies and PrescribeWellness. He is also past president of the Georgia Pharmacy Association.
The NCPA House of Delegates also elected three new officers: Ben McNabb, PharmD, owner of Love Oak Pharmacy in Eastland, Texas; Ashley Seyfarth, PharmD, owner/pharmacist at Kare Drug Community Pharmacy, which has locations in Aztec and Bloomfield, N.M.; and Khanh-Long (Ken) Thai, PharmD, co-founder of 986 Degrees Corporation and owner/operator of multiple 986 Pharmacy locations throughout Southern California and Nevada.
In other business, NCPA’s House of Delegates – comprised of pharmacy owners and managers representing their respective states – approved position statements on several different issues: resolving that pharmacists should be held harmless in the face of conflicting state and federal guidelines, regulations, and laws; opposing payer restrictions on pharmacy purchasing practices; resolving that the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services should establish reasonable pharmacy reimbursement under Medicare Part D; and supporting state policies granting pharmacists prescriptive authority to more medications.
