R.I. pharmacists set to celebrate wins in vaccinations and contraceptive authority

NCPA July 3, 2025

Rhode Island is set to become at least the sixteenth state to modernize its vaccination laws and allow pharmacists to independently administer COVID and flu vaccines to patients three years and older. S.B. 166 was passed by the Rhode Island House of Representatives and is now headed to the desk of Gov. Dan McKee (D) for his expected signature. Also headed to his desk is S.B. 476, which changes a law that had limited pharmacist-initiated contraceptive prescriptions to no longer than a three-month supply. The new law removes the three-month supply limit. These new rules will be set by the state Board of Pharmacy and the Department of Health.

NCPA sent a letter of support for both bills when they were heard in their committees. We congratulate the Rhode Island Pharmacists Association on their success!
