On this date in 1957, the Wham-O company—which is behind the Hula-Hoop and other objectively great toys—rolled out the first lot of aerodynamic plastic discs that we now call Frisbees. Why "Frisbee," you ask? According to History.com, the name came from pie tins by the Frisbie Pie Company that college students would toss around to each other. The design for the modern disc was patented in 1967, featuring raised ridges to help stabilize its flight. Similar discs are produced these days by dozens of manufacturers for use in such activities as Frisbee Golf, Freestyle Frisbee, and Ultimate Frisbee. (And yes, there's an international organization that oversees governance of flying disc sports—check out the World Flying Disc Federation's current Ultimate rules, which took effect on Jan. 1.)
