Anyone here excited about the upcoming Olympic Games?! The opening ceremony—which we’re told will be bold, original and unique—kicks off in Paris next Friday, July 26. It’ll be held on the Seine River with boats for each national delegation (here’s more on that, courtesy of the Associated Press). Why are we telling you all this? Because on this date in 1976, Nadia Comaneci of Romania became the first gymnast to be awarded a perfect score of 10 in an Olympic gymnastics event for her performance in the uneven parallel bars at the Games in Montreal. The scoreboard wasn’t designed to display a perfect 10, however, and instead flashed “1.00,” leading to a bit of confusion among the audience and officials. “I don’t run away from a challenge because I am afraid,” Comaneci said. “Instead, I run toward it because the only way to escape fear is to trample it beneath your feet.” Hear, hear!
