Tennessee governor signs expansion of pharmacy scope of practice into law

NCPA May 9, 2024

Gov. Bill Lee (R) of Tennessee signed into law SB869/HB 282 which makes permanent PREP ACT authorities for immunization and testing and allows pharmacists to prescribe preventative medication for medical conditions. The legislation includes provisions permitting pharmacists to dispense under certain conditions: opioid antagonists, epinephrine auto injectors, post exposure prophylaxis (PEP) for exposure to HIV infection, and hormonal contraception. We are proud to stand with the Tennessee Pharmacists Association, the bill’s sponsor, Sen. Shane Reeves (R), and fellow national pharmacy partners in this great accomplishment! Tennessee is among the 30+ states that have expanded pharmacists’ scope of practice to align with the PREP Act. The PREP Act expires in December 2024.
