Do these five things while you wait for your order of updated COVID-19 vaccine:

Follow FRPP or health department instructions to dispose of any remaining bivalent vaccine.

Check your dispensing system for the product profiles for the 2023-2024 Moderna Spikevax and Pfizer Comirnaty products.

Know your vaccine provider network status. At the end of the public health emergency in May 2023, health plans are no longer required to cover vaccine claims from out of network providers (your patient may be eligible, but you may not be a covered provider).

Check with plans to see what updated claim coding procedures they have for billing vaccine product and administration. The updated vaccine products each have a unique NDC and CPT code, in addition to a new product-agnostic administration code. The codes are available for download from AMA.

Download and review the 2023 Vaccine Storage and Handling Toolkit with all pharmacy staff who handle vaccines.
