There are just days to go before the nomination period closes on July 28 for the 2023 Willard B. Simmons Independent Pharmacist of the Year Award. The annual award is given by NCPA to a pharmacist who exhibits exemplary professional leadership, service to community, and commitment to independent pharmacy. Last year’s recipient, Khanh-Long (Ken) Thai, PharmD, is owner and operator of 986 Degrees Corporation, a pharmacy franchise that serves as a platform for pharmacists to become independent pharmacy owners. Thai, a longtime advocate for independent community pharmacists, was actively involved in passing SB 493 in California, which officially declared pharmacists as “health care providers,” granting them authority to provide health care services.
