CDC issues clinical practice guidelines for prescribing opioids

NCPA November 22, 2022

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has finalized its 2022 clinical practice guidelines for prescribing opioids for pain. The guidelines include 12 recommendations for clinicians providing pain care for outpatients aged 18 years or older with acute pain (duration less than one month), subacute pain (duration of one to three months), or chronic pain (duration of more than three months).

The recommendations in the 2022 Clinical Practice Guideline do not apply to pain management related to sickle cell disease, cancer-related pain treatment, palliative care, or end-of-life care. NCPA submitted comments to FDA on its proposed program regarding mail-back envelopes and education on safe disposal with opioid analgesics back in June.
