Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Wolf (D) signed HB 1630, which gives the Pennsylvania auditor general the authority to audit subcontracts with pharmacy benefit managers serving Medicaid managed care organizations in the commonwealth. The need for this legislation was made apparent in 2018, when the auditor general released a report showing payments to Medicaid’s PBMs had doubled over the course of four years, but the auditor didn’t have access to necessary information to explain the cause of the increase. Congratulations to the Pennsylvania Pharmacists Association and all community pharmacists advocates in Pennsylvania for helping bring much-needed transparency to the state’s Medicaid program!
