John White returned from England to the Roanoke Island colony in North Carolina to find no trace of the colonists he had left there three years earlier. “The Lost Colony,” a long-running outdoor musical based on the story, is performed during the summer in Manteo, N.C. As a college student, Andy Griffith performed there.
