Caremark has informed NCPA that it will amend its pharmacy provider manual to update language just implemented concerning required notifications by a pharmacy to Caremark when making bulk purchases of a product representing more than a 30-day supply of that product billed to Caremark.
Many have voiced concern recently, and NCPA raised the issue of the unmanageable requirements with industry stakeholders in November, prior to its implementation. We are encouraged that Caremark has indicated they will be clarifying their intent, altering procedures and making revisions to the pharmacy provider manual language.
As of this writing, a notice from Caremark to pharmacies is expected anytime, and we understand that it will be effective immediately.
NCPA continues to encourage members to reach out to their Senators about investigating PBMs over restrictive and onerous business tactics. In the meantime, NCPA continues to push Congress and the federal agencies to investigate PBM practices. See related article below:
