BeatlesOn this day in 1964 the Beatles played their first-ever show in the U.S. at a venue called the Coliseum in Washington, D.C., less than two days after they rocked the country with their appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show.

Despite eight inches of snow on the ground, people swarmed the city to get into the show, with over 8,000 attending. The band played for 40 minutes. The concert became such a phenomenon that it was shown in over 100 movie theaters across the country.

If you've ever been to the REI flagship store in D.C., you've actually set foot in the same place the concert was held. The Coliseum was used for all sorts of events, including baseball games, wrestling matches, rallies, and more.

LIFE Magazine has some neat photos from the leadup to the concert, and the rest of their tour, here.
