A man in the small town of Abu, Japan, discovered an extra 46 million yen (about $360,000 USD) in his bank account, and over a 10-day period, he spent the money on online gambling. One problem, and it was a big one: the money wasn’t his. It seems that the money was COVID-19 assistance for low-income households, but it was mistakenly wired to the 24-year-old unemployed man’s bank account. Police said he admitted to spending most of the taxpayers’ money on gambling. According to a Japanese news agency, only 68,000 yen ($530) is left in his bank account after he withdrew the money 34 times in just over 10 days after the town made the mistake. The man was arrested last week.
