Payers will cover essential diagnostic services

NCPA April 13, 2020

On April 11, CMS and the Departments of Labor and Treasury, issued guidance implementing the Families First Coronavirus Response Act and the CARES Act,requiring group health plans and group and individual health insurance to cover COVID-19 diagnostic testing and other related services, including antibody testing, provided during a medical visit, with no cost sharing. Given HHS' recent announcement authorizing pharmacists to administer these tests, community and LTC pharmacists should work through their state associations to coordinate participation in this opportunity. Currently, only three tests have been authorized by the FDA through an Emergency Use Authorization to be performed in patient care settings. Most pharmacies will need a CLIA certificate of waiver to administer these tests. To learn more about COVID testing in the pharmacy, check out a replay of last week's webinar.
